Characterization
Section 1: In the first section the characters are indirectly characterized. An example would be, Eddie's courageous acts to try and save the little girl from getting killed by the falling roller coaster and him taking his life to save her. “The little girl raised her arms. Eddie lunged. His bad leg buckled. He half flew, half stumbled toward her, landing on the metal platform…” (Albom 18). This shows Eddies courageousness.
Section 2: In the second section the characters have indirect characterization. They are indirectly characterized because of the calm way in that The Blue Man acts. Eddie says to The Blue Man “'What...killed...you?” The Blue Man looked a bit surprised. He smiled at Eddie. “You did,” he said.'” (Albom 36). This shows that The Blue Man is calm because he is talking to the person who killed him without being mad.
Section 3: In the third section the characters are indirectly characterized, I know this because the captain is a good leader because he sacrificed himself to protect his men and brothers. “The captain grabbed a rifle and jumped out...signaling he would check the path ahead...the path was clear. He waved to his men. A plane zoomed overhead and he lifted his eyes to see whose side it was. It was at that moment, while he was looking to the heavens, that a small click sounded beneath his right foot. The mine exploded instantly, like a burping flame from the earth’s core.” (Albom 90). This shows the captains leadership and sacrifice.
Section 4: In the fourth section the characters have indirect characterization. For example, Ruby’s personality is shown when she is telling Eddie to have forgiveness or be forgiving. “You need to forgive your father” (Albom 142), this is what Ruby tells Eddie whthey are talking about when his dad died. This shows that Ruby cares about Eddie and his family.
Section 5: In the fifth section the characters are mostly indirectly characterized. An example would be Eddie putting his head on Marguerite’s shoulder and start crying. “ He dropped his head onto her shoulder and, for the first time since his death, began to cry” (Albom 154). This shows the audience that Eddie was sad.
Section 6: In the sixth section most of the characters are indirectly characterized. For example, Tala, which is the last person he meets in heaven, was the shadow in the fire that Eddie saw when he was in the Army. Eddie realized that he had let Tala burn in the fire and he said, “'I killed you, I KILLED YOU,” then a whispered “forgive me,” then, “FORGIVE ME, OH, GOD…” and finally, “What have I done...WHAT HAVE I DONE?...'” (Albom 189). this shows that Eddie is forgiving.
