Structure
Section 1: Section one of this book is the exposition. In this section the characters and the relationships are introduced. This section starts off in the last hour of the main character Eddies life. Eddie dies in an accident at Ruby Pier where Eddie worked. The ride “Freddy’s Free Fall” broke and one of the carts on the ride fell and Eddie pushed a little girl out of the way to save her life but it took his. Eddie asks every person he meets in heaven if he saved the little girl. The rest of the book after section one is Eddies journey to heaven and he meets the five people that had an effect on his life in some way.
Section 2: Section two of the book is the rising action. In this section Eddie has just died and is meeting the first person he is supposed to meet in heaven. There is a new character introduced, The Blue Man. The Blue Man tells Eddie about how he affected his life and teaches Eddie that he needs to look at life from two different angles. “Take one story, viewed from two different angles” (Albom 42). This is what The Blue Man tells Eddie and it tells the audience that just because something doesn't affect you doesn’t mean that it doesn’t affect someone else. Eddie tried to ask The Blue Man if he saved the little girl, ‘“Wait!” Eddie yelled, but he was suddenly whisked into the air, away from the cemetery, soaring above the great gray ocean.”’ (Albom 50).
Section 3: The third section of the book is rising action. In the third section a new character is introduced, Eddies Captain when he was in Word War 2. Eddies lesson in this section is that just because you die it doesn’t mean that its all over, there is life after death. ‘“Dying? Not the end of everything. We think it is. But what happens on earth is only the beginning.’” (Albom 91). What the author is trying to tell the audience is that there is life after the life on earth. ‘“I just want to know, thats all,” he mumbled. The captain scratched behind his ear. He looked at Eddie sympathetically. “I can’t tell you, soldier.”’ (Albom 96).
Section 4: The fourth section of the book is rising action. In this section Eddie meets the third person he is supposed to meet, Ruby. Ruby is the girl that the pier where Eddie worked at was named after, “Ruby Pier”. Ruby teaches Eddie to have forgiveness because you never know when your time is up. “You need to forgive your father” (Albom 142). Ruby is telling Eddie this because him and his father didn’t have a very good relationship.
Section 5: The fifth section of the book is rising action. In the fifth section Eddie meets the fourth person in heaven. That person is his wife, Marguerite. Marguerite tells Eddie that love lasts forever even after death. ‘“Life has to end,” she said. “Love doesn’t.”’ (Albom 173). What the author is trying to tell the audience is that if you love someone on earth but then you die, you still love them in the afterlife.
Section 6: The final section is climax, falling action, and the resolution. In the final section Eddie meets the final person in heaven Eddie meets a little girl named Tala. Tala was the shape that Eddie saw in the fire when he was in war. “You burn me. You make me fire.” (Albom 187). Eddie realized that he let that little girl burn and die in that fire. Also in this section Tala tells Eddie that he saved the little girl at the accident, and that the hands that he felt when he died were Talas hands bringing him up to heaven. “Push her legs. No pull. You push. Big thing fall. You keep her safe” (Albom 192).
